The Coinage Act of 1864

On April 22 the Coinage Act of 1864 was put into place by the United States government. The Coinage Act of 1864 allows the United States mint to place “In God We Trust” on all American currency. The reason for putting “In God We Trust “on United States currency was to show that America recognized a deity and because of the heighten religious sentiment from the devastating Civil War. The first coin to have “In God We Trust” was a two cent coin.
